Traditions of QUINTANA ROO

An area that has been surrounded by continuous divisions. When the Spanish arrived, the peninsula was in crisis, divided into 19 small chiefdoms; however, the conquest was difficult, but it was consummated and encomiendas were created.

These did not prosper and the region was abandoned, which caused that the coastal area from Honduras to Ascension Bay was a refuge for English pirates who ravaged the Spanish collection centers.

Independence little changed things and the rebellious tradition of the Mayans and gave rise to the Caste War in 1847. After several divisions of the peninsula, in 1902 the Territory of Quintana Roo was created, with its current extension. The population process of Quintana Roo changed completely and in 1974 a decree elevated it to a Free and Sovereign state
