In a remarkable tourism boom, Nayarit, Mexico, welcomed a staggering 50.4 million tourists to its hotel rooms during the first seven months of 2023. This revelation came from Miguel Torruco Marqués, the Secretary of Tourism for the federal Government. His announcement showcased a robust surge in visitors, with national tourists dominating the scene, making up 73.1 percent of the total, while foreign tourists constituted 26.9 percent of the influx.
Between January and July 2023, cities in Nayarit witnessed a surge of 27.1 million tourists booking hotel rooms, while beachfront destinations played host to 23.3 million visitors. This distribution reflects the diverse attractions that Nayarit offers, ranging from urban experiences to serene coastal getaways.
According to Torruco Marqués, the hotel occupancy rates in Nayarit were robust. In the 70 monitored centers, the overall occupancy stood at 60.2 percent, marking a 4.7 percentage point increase compared to the same period in 2022. Beachside resorts outshone their city counterparts with a 69.2 percent occupancy rate, a 2.5 percentage point increase from the previous year.
City destinations in Nayarit exhibited promising growth, with an occupancy rate of 52.2 percent during the first seven months of 2023. This surpassed the 2022 figure of 45.9 percent, indicating a growing interest in urban exploration. Notably, Comprehensively Planned Centers (CIP) recorded varying occupancy levels, with extreme locales boasting an impressive 74.3 percent and interior cities registering a slightly lower 47.3 percent occupancy in the same period.
Certain destinations stood out for their exceptional hotel occupancy rates. In the January-July 2023 period, Akumal led the pack with an impressive 85.1 percent occupancy, followed closely by Playacar at 84.1 percent, Cabo San Lucas at 81.2 percent, Nuevo Nayarit at 78.4 percent, Cancun at 76.4 percent, and Puerto Vallarta at 76.3 percent.
The Secretary of Tourism reported a significant boost in the number of occupied hotel rooms. During the first seven months of 2023, Nayarit recorded an average of 261,446 rooms in use, marking an 11.5 percent increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Beachfront locations saw a 9 percent increase, with 142,489 rooms occupied, while city destinations experienced a remarkable surge of 14.7 percent, accounting for 118,958 occupied rooms from January to July 2023.
Nayarit’s record-breaking tourism figures for the first half of 2023 signal a robust recovery and growing popularity among both national and international tourists.
