The “Festival del Viento” (Wind Festival) in Nayarit, Mexico, is set to elevate the region’s status as an international tourist destination. Miguel Torruco Marqués, the head of the Ministry of Tourism, emphasized that Nayarit offers a wealth of natural, cultural, and gastronomic attractions that continue to gain popularity among both domestic and international tourists.
The festival, which showcases aquatic sports like kiteboarding, is the largest event of its kind in Mexico and Latin America. It is expected to attract 300 competitors from countries such as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, and Mexico, along with an estimated 10,000 spectators who will be able to watch the eleventh international kiteboarding championship through various digital platforms and television broadcasts.
Torruco Marqués highlighted the impact of events like the Wind Festival and the “Nayarit from Heaven” skydiving event in attracting sports tourism, promoting destinations, diversifying the tourism offerings, extending visitor stays, and generating economic benefits for local communities. He also praised Nayarit’s diverse tourist attractions, including its Magical Towns, archaeological zones, and picturesque beaches along the Riviera Nayarit coastline. The Mexican government has invested in infrastructure projects to improve connectivity, such as the construction of the Tepic-Compostela-Las Varas highway and the expansion of the Tepic International Airport.
The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with state authorities, provides technical advice on the development of specialized tourism routes in areas like sports, gastronomy, culture, and nature. Nayarit is part of a strategic alliance called “Mar de Cortés,” which includes the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Sonora. This alliance aims to promote and develop tourism activities in the region sustainably and inclusively. Nayarit has also seen significant foreign direct investment in tourism, with 3.447 billion dollars registered in 2022, an increase of 216% compared to 2019.
Torruco Marqués announced that the Wind Festival is part of a series of high-impact events planned across Mexico, including the Great Desert Race in Puerto Peñasco, the Downhill cycling show in Zacatecas, and the Mar a Mar race in Baja California Sur. The Ministry of Tourism estimates that tourism revenues in 2023 will exceed 31 billion dollars, representing a 27% increase compared to 2019. The president of the Association of Secretaries of Tourism and Secretary of Tourism of Nayarit, Juan Enrique Suárez del Real Tostado, expressed his support for the promotion of tourism in Nayarit and the significance of events like the Wind Festival in diversifying tourism activities and benefiting local communities.
The Wind Festival is not only expected to attract athletes from different nations but also to showcase the attractions of Nayarit, such as the Aguamilpa Dam and the San Pedro Lagunillas Lagoon. The event organizers, along with the Mexican Kitesurfing Association and Sabino Mx, are working to position Nayarit as a top destination by introducing new attractions and leveraging the potential of various destinations within the region.
