Tlaxcala clinched the Tourism Innovation award at the FITUR 2024 Excellence Awards held in Madrid, Spain. The accolade was bestowed upon the “Tlaxcala Brilla” platform, launched during the 2023 firefly season, showcasing the state’s commitment to showcasing its cultural, historical, natural, archaeological, and recreational attractions on the global stage. Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, head of the Ministry of Tourism (Secture), accepted the award on behalf of Governor Lorena Cuéllar Cisneros.

In a telephone interview, Rodríguez Zamora emphasized that the award is a testament to Governor Cuéllar’s dedication to advancing tourism in Tlaxcala and elevating its international profile. The platform, “Tlaxcala Brilla,” aimed to facilitate the commercialization of firefly sightings, enhance tourist understanding of the phenomenon, and promote additional activities in the region, effectively putting Tlaxcala on the global tourism map.

Governor Cuéllar expressed her joy at the recognition, seeing it as a new chapter in Tlaxcala’s tourism narrative. Rodríguez Zamora highlighted the success of the platform, which surpassed expectations by winning at the FITUR 2024 Excellence Awards, running from January 24 to 28 in Madrid. She reiterated that Tlaxcala’s presence in Spain marks a significant milestone and opens doors for more media visibility.

The head of Secture mentioned informing President Cuéllar promptly about the award, emphasizing the positive impact on Tlaxcala’s visibility worldwide. Additionally, she disclosed ongoing efforts to secure a promotional agreement with El Corte Inglés, a department store in Spain, underscoring the commitment to sustaining the momentum gained through the award.

As FITUR 2024 progresses, Rodríguez Zamora highlighted Tlaxcala’s extensive tourism promotion agenda in Spain until January 28. Meetings with tour operators and presentations on attractions, routes, as well as hospitality services are scheduled, aiming to attract more national and international visitors each month.

Furthermore, she detailed upcoming engagements with wholesale tour operators and discussions with Ibero-American units, showcasing Tlaxcala’s commitment to fostering partnerships and exchanges. The state is also exploring collaborations with Colombia, with invitations for reciprocal exchanges that stand to benefit Tlaxcala’s tourism sector.

In a significant move, Rodríguez Zamora met with Gustavo Santos, the regional director for the Americas of the World Tourism Organization, to discuss progress on the Tlaxcala Sustainable Tourism Observatory. The initiative aims to enhance the competitiveness of Tlaxcala’s tourism sector by adhering to indicators in economic, environmental, and social areas as determined by the INSTO Network.

FITUR 2024, spanning four days, remains a crucial platform for Tlaxcala to showcase its tourism potential and forge meaningful connections with the international tourism community.
