The first half of 2023 has showcased Jalisco‘s rising stature in the realm of international tourism, as it welcomed a staggering 1.7 million foreign visitors. This impressive figure not only represents a remarkable 16.5% growth compared to 2022 but also an impressive 17% surge compared to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. Amongst Mexico’s various states, Jalisco now stands proudly as the third most sought-after destination by global tourists, surpassed only by the bustling Quintana Roo and the vibrant Mexico City.
The driving force behind this achievement is the state’s thriving capital, Guadalajara. During this period, Jalisco has managed to secure an impressive 16% of the total foreign tourist influx across Mexico, with only Quintana Roo and Mexico City leading the charts. Vanessa Pérez Lamas, the visionary leader at the helm of Jalisco’s Secretary of Tourism (Secturjal), expressed her elation, emphasizing how this accomplishment reinforces the collaborative efforts of the sector to bolster and elevate the allure of the state’s tourist hotspots.
Intriguingly, data released by the Unit for Immigration Policy-Registry and Identity of Persons within the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) unveiled that the United States took the lead as the prime source of tourists to Jalisco, contributing a significant 1.3 million visitors, marking a commendable 7% increase from 2022. Canada was next in line, sending 299,365 eager explorers, showcasing a staggering 91% growth from the first half of 2022. The United Kingdom secured the third spot, with 11,380 enthusiastic travelers.
Further analysis of the data disclosed that Colombia followed suit, emerging as the fourth largest contributor to Jalisco’s international tourism, with 5,803 visitors. The ranks continued with India (4,299), Germany (3,199), Australia (3,187), Spain (3,184), China (2,569), and France (2,273). Additional nationalities collectively accounted for 34,687 tourists.
Delving deeper into the statistics, Pérez Lamas highlighted that a significant 78% of the total foreign visitors were Americans, and 18% hailed from Canada. This combined American-Canadian influx consequently encapsulated a remarkable 96% of Jalisco’s international tourism market, a testament to the state’s immense appeal to these two key nations.
Turning our attention to specific destinations within Jalisco, the Puerto Vallarta international airport achieved a noteworthy milestone by accommodating 1.04 million foreign tourists from January to June. This impressive figure translates to a 15% surge in comparison to the previous year’s data, solidifying Puerto Vallarta’s position as the fourth most sought-after foreign tourist destination in Jalisco. It is only eclipsed by the popularity of Cancun, Mexico City, and San José del Cabo.
Jalisco’s rise as a significant international tourist hub not only underscores its inherent charm and diverse attractions but also highlights the diligence and strategic planning of its tourism sector. As the state continues to captivate the hearts and minds of travelers, it’s on a trajectory to become an even more prominent global tourism hotspot in the coming years.
