Famous for the production of beautiful spheres. It is located in the northern part of the state of Puebla, just three hours from CDMX. Its name comes from Nahuatl and means “over the nine waters” and during pre-Hispanic times this region was inhabited by Totonac peoples.

It is a colorful town full of charm, with its traditional houses, temples and gardens. It is known for its production of beautiful spheres that embellish its picturesque streets in a very particular way. There is a great variety of restaurants with the seal of Puebla cuisine around the main square. Be sure to try the traditional fig and cheese bread.

In November, it holds a unique festival called the Festival of Light and Life where the entire Chignahuapan Lagoon is lit with torches. The celebration is born from a pre-Hispanic ritual that seeks to achieve purification. This festival begins at night in the main square of the town lit with candles and the people carrying torches and the Calzada de las Almas is crossed from the Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol to the shore of the lagoon, and this is a representation of the trip of the death until reaching Mictlán.

In the Plaza de Armas there is an original Mudejar style kiosk built in wood in 1871 with a fountain inside. This colorful kiosk surrounded by lush vegetation.

The walk begins in the center of Cuetzalan, in the main square, framed by the white and red of the Municipal Palace and the quarry of the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís, built in the 17th century and remodeled in the first half of the 20th century. You can visit the zócalo, an arabesque-style plaza with a unique two-story kiosk where you can enjoy a delicious coffee and the peaceful atmosphere of Atlixco. In front is the Parroquia de la Natividad whose construction began in 1579.

Also near the main square are the Portal Hidalgo and the Portal Morelos, dating from the 18th century, the Municipal Palace with its talavera facade and beautiful murals.

One of the must-sees is the San Juan de Dios Hospital dating from the 16th century with a Pinacoteca that exhibits more than 50 works from the 17th and 18th centuries by the famous artists of the colonial era, Luis Berrueco and Pablo Talavera.

You can not miss the Avenida Hidalgo, one of the most beautiful in Atlixco with colorful houses, balconies full of colorful flowers and beautiful lanterns with the characteristic blacksmith work of Puebla.

The former Convent of Carmen, dating from the 16th century, is one of the oldest buildings in Atlixco and today houses two museums: the Museum of Valle Cultures and the Santa Clara Museum.

Another must-see is the Chapel of the Third Order dating from the late 17th century, with a magnificent Baroque altarpiece and an incredible façade; in fact, it is considered one of the best mortar sets that have been preserved in the entire state of Puebla.

And if you like plants, you can also visit the Bonsai Art Museum, which exhibits more than forty species of trees, among which stand out: Brazilian cherry, ficus, bougainvillea, ahuehuetes and cica palms.

You can travel by train from Puebla to Cholula on the Tourist Train. To board, you have to arrive 30 minutes in advance and the terminal is located in the Archaeological Zone of Cholula.

There is also a tram that offers a three and a half hour ride around the city. The tour departs from the Zocalo of Puebla and goes through the main attractions of Cholula. It leaves every day at 11:00 hrs.

The meeting place of San Pedro Cholula is the monumental Plaza de la Concordia, flanked by the Ex-convent of San Gabriel and the Guerrero portal, which is the longest in Mexico with 170 meters in length and 46 semicircular arches. This square dates from 1573 when it was built to house the busy tianguis. In 1646, it was remodeled and boasts a beautiful fountain of San Miguel Arcángel donated in 1554 by Felipe II of Spain.

This is where the Great Pyramid of Cholula is located, which has the appearance of a hill, since it is composed of a series of superimposed pyramids and is the largest in the world with 450 meters per side. Inside the pyramid, a total of eight kilometers of tunnels have been excavated where interesting pre-Hispanic murals have been found, such as the so-called “mural of pulque drinkers”.

At the top of the pyramid is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Remedies, built in 1540. Its beautiful dome is covered with tiles and contrasts with the impressive Popocatépetl volcano. The archaeological zone has a Site Museum, which shows the history of the pyramid and the church.

Religious Architecture in Cholula

The Former Franciscan Convent of San Gabriel, is one of the oldest temples in Mexico, since it was built in 1549 on a pre-Hispanic temple dedicated to Quetzalcóatl, and has a small gallery of Sacred Art.

The Royal Chapel or the Natural Chapel of Cholula is attached, inside it preserves a baptismal font from the 16th century. However, the most impressive thing is its ceiling of 49 domes.

The church of Santa María Tonantzintla, built in the 16th century, boasts impressive popular baroque art with an indigenous interpretation, incorporating elements such as brown angels, Mexican fruits and plumes.

The temple of San Francisco Acatepec built from 1650 to 1750 with a wonderful façade of multicolored mosaics considered a jewel of the Mexican Baroque.

You can also visit the Museum of the City of Cholula, housed in the Casa del Caballero Águila and which exhibits in its six rooms about 2,300 pieces related to pre-Hispanic and colonial times.

Another interesting museum is the Museo de la Talavera that shows a semblance of the talavera from the 16th century to the present day.

You can also visit the La Barrica Museum, which seeks to teach the manufacture and tradition of cider.

In Pahuatlán, the inhabitants of this region have managed to keep their way of life and their Nahuatl and Otomí traditions intact. This town was part of the lordship of Totonacapan, proof of this is the traditional Dance of the Flyers that continues to take place in this place. The production of amate paper is very typical, but you can also find traditional embroidery and beadwork.

About 20 minutes from Pahuatlán, is San Pablito with an Otomi community that has maintained the tradition of making paper amate for centuries. Offerings to nature deities in caves and springs are also common in this community.

3 km from the center of Pahuatlán is the Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla Hanging Bridge. This connects the community of Pahuatlán del Valle with Xólotl and passes over the Pautita River. It measures 36 meters high and 60 meters long.

You cannot miss the Don Conche Tellez Coffee Farm where you can learn more about the coffee production process: the extraction of the pulp, fermentation, washing, drying, peeling and roasting. In addition, you can enjoy a rich cup of the aromatic drink.

You can also visit the Cerro del Cirio where you can go hiking, mountaineering and rappelling.

When visiting this town you can enjoy a quiet atmosphere and stroll through its large plinth with a garden that looks like an orchard, surrounded by picturesque portals impregnated with the exquisite smell of coffee that emanates from cafes.

It stands out, the monumental Virgin of Guadalupe, 20 meters high, which holds the record for the image of the largest “Morenita del Tepeyac” in Latin America.

The Parish of San Juan Bautista is a 16th century Augustinian construction with a neo-Gothic style that reflects a structural resemblance to the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The Casa Carranza Museum, a building that was the last residence of Venustiano Carranza, and where photographs and pieces that illustrate the history of the place are exhibited.
 

A clear example of the mysticism of the place are the El Ángel de tu Salud Botanical Center, where medicinal plants are grown and the Xochipila Ceremonial Center, a pre-Hispanic sacred rock where its inhabitants, shamans, witches and all the ethnic groups of Puebla meet annually to honor to San Juan Techachalco with dances, music and with the brilliant color of the marigold flowers and evoke its power for cleansing and healing.

Tranquility and Adventure. It is located at the foot of Cerro Cabezón in the Sierra Norte of the State of Puebla, 150 km from both the city of Puebla and Xalapa. Its name comes from the Nahuatl words “Tlatlahui” which means to color and “Tepetl” which means hill; that is to say “on the red or reddened hill.”

Tlatlauquitepec has the peculiarity of having a variety of climates that range from cold in the southern part of the municipality, through a more pleasant temperate climate in the municipal seat to the warm climate typical of the north of the municipality, so it offers many options. On Sundays there is a flea market in the Main Square where you can buy handicrafts such as: palm baskets, wooden toys and embroidered woolen shawls.

A Paradise in the middle of the forest, rivers and mountains. This beautiful mountain town is located just two hours from Mexico City and its surroundings constitute a true paradise composed of forests, rivers, mountains and lagoons. Its name means “on the wall of trees in Nahuatl and it is part of the region called Sierra Mágica. Its first settlers settled in 1116 and belonged to the Chichimeca culture. Only a few small mounds located in the El Cerrito neighborhood remain from pre-Hispanic times.

A very important part of its economy is based on floriculture, that is why it is famous for its Flower Fair that takes place in February, where orchids and azaleas are the protagonists.

The town center maintains its colonial charm, with a Plaza de Armas that is the heart of the town and is surrounded on its four sides by traditional portals where various businesses are housed.

In the center there is a pleasant kiosk and its benches shaded by huge trees and palm trees invite you to sit and enjoy the peace that is breathed in Huauchinango. Opposite is the Municipal Palace, with a colonial style consisting of two levels and is adorned with iron balconies.

Walking through the center of this picturesque town is to enjoy its wide gardens and busy portals, to know its large old houses with their barred windows and well-kept balconies.

Its main square is a beautiful meeting place where its monumental clock of five meters in diameter and adorned with colorful flowers, the Municipal Palace and the Parish of San Pedro and San Pablo that dates from the 17th century with a sober neoclassical style and a incredible white altar laminated in gold.

In front of the Parish there is a monumental construction dating from 1567 that corresponds to the Franciscan Conventual Complex, which makes it the oldest in the state. Today it continues to function as a convent and has admirable murals depicting deer, bees and jaguars, as well as the daily life of Spanish and indigenous characters. Its cloister is currently the headquarters of the House of Culture and the “Luciano Márquez Becerra” Community Regional Museum.

You can also visit the Alberto Olvera Clockwork and Automata Museum, where objects that narrate the measurement of time over the centuries are displayed. Saturdays at 9pm. a show is presented consisting of dolls dressed in regional costumes that appear in the windows while a carillon sounds with traditional songs.

Its surroundings offer a great variety of natural beauties such as the Salto de Quetzalapan, a beautiful waterfall with a fall of more than 100 meters. and where it is necessary to climb 365 steps that correspond to the days of the year.
