Under the leadership of Mayor Salvador Santos Cedillo, Huamantla has emerged as a shining example of successful tourism development in the Tlaxcala region. Over the past two years, this picturesque municipality has taken significant steps to bolster its reputation as a national and international tourist destination, particularly in the realms of sports, art, cuisine, and culture. Throughout this journey, the town has consistently showcased the grandeur of its people and its historical heritage.

To enhance its tourism potential, the administration embarked on a mission to make Huamantla a year-round tourist hub through a series of events. Traditionally famous for the August Huamantla Fair in honor of the Virgen de La Caridad, the town now boasts a diverse calendar of attractions, including Los Viernes de Muéganos, Las Trecenas del Barrio de San Antonio, October festivities celebrating the Huamantla Foundation, the “Day of the Dead” Festival, and the enchanting “Aldea Mágica” Christmas Fair. These events have cemented Huamantla’s status as the Cultural Heart of Mexico.

Moreover, Huamantla’s bid to host the Tlaxcala 2023 Beach Volleyball World Championship from October 5 to 15 has created considerable buzz. This international sporting event, set to take place in the revamped Plaza de Toros “The Taurine,” promises economic windfalls for the town’s commercial sector and a memorable experience for thousands of visitors.

Among the achievements of Mayor Santos Cedillo’s administration is the inclusion of Huamantla in the “Rutas Mágicas de Color” Program. This initiative breathed new life into homes and public spaces by revamping and adorning house facades, infusing the town with vibrant colors and tradition.

One of Huamantla’s most iconic traditions is the creation of sawdust rugs and carpets, an ephemeral art form that instills pride in the community. The town made headlines by setting a Guinness World Record for the longest sawdust mat in the world on August 14, 2022. This achievement has piqued the interest of tourists, drawing them to the traditional “Night that nobody sleeps” to marvel at the intricate designs crafted by Huamantla’s artisans.

Furthermore, municipal and state authorities are collaborating to nominate the “Carpets and Rugs of Ephemeral Art of Huamantla” for inclusion in the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, paying homage to the artisans who have preserved this beautiful tradition.

To foster cultural and tourist exchanges, Huamantla has forged sisterhood ties with Salvatierra, Guanajuato, and San Pablo Villa de Mitla, Oaxaca, both fellow Magical Towns. These connections offer artisans opportunities to showcase their work on broader stages, representing not only their craft but also Huamantla itself. Additionally, the town has established a twinning relationship with the German city of Bad Köstritz, expanding its global outreach.

Recognizing the importance of hospitality, Mayor Santos Cedillo initiated training programs for tourist service providers to enhance their customer service skills. The modernization of sales methods, including the distribution of electronic payment devices, promises direct benefits for these providers and their families.

Huamantla, under Mayor Salvador Santos Cedillo’s results-driven leadership, is on an upward trajectory, promoting the well-being of its residents through modern and clear strategies. This transformation has undeniably positioned Huamantla as the Cultural Heart of Mexico, beckoning travelers from near and far to experience its charm and culture.
