After eight years of waiting, Córdoba and Naolinco finally receive the title of Magical Town
Published by Crónica de Xalapa on June 28, 2023
Córdoba and Naolinco, two towns in Veracruz, Mexico, have finally been granted the coveted title of Magical Town after an eight-year wait. This designation, given by the federal Ministry of Tourism, is highly sought after as it guarantees an 8 percent increase in tourist activity and brings economic benefits to the region. The integration of these towns into the program was celebrated in Veracruz, with officials expressing their gratitude to Miguel Torruco Marqués, the head of the agency, and Iván Francisco Martínez Olvera, the State Secretary of Tourism and Culture, for their support and coordination.
During a press conference, the mayor of Córdoba, Juan Martínez Flores, expressed his pride in the distinction and highlighted the historical significance of the city. Córdoba is the birthplace of independent Mexico, marked by the signing of the Treaties between Agustín de Iturbide and Juan O’Donojú. The mayor emphasized that this important date, August 24, provides a great opportunity to explore the coffee farms and museums in the area.
The city’s notable landmarks, including the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, the Portal de Zevallos and the Portal de la Gloria, the Obelisk, the Museum of the City, and the Exhacienda San Francisco Toxpan, which houses the National Sugarcane Museum, are all part of the tourist route.
Luis Manuel Montero Hernández, the municipal president of Naolinco, expressed his commitment to promoting the charms of his town. Naolinco is known for its gastronomy, handicrafts made of fur, footwear, and its picturesque cobbled alleys. The town is particularly proud of its traditions, such as the Moors and Christians Dance and La Cantada, which is the only celebration in the country that commemorates the memory of the faithful departed.
Montero Hernández highlighted the training opportunities provided by various levels of government to support the service sector, particularly restaurateurs and tourist guides. He expressed gratitude for the cooperation of the private sector, civil society, and the secretariats of Tourism.
The mayor of Papantla, Eric Domínguez Vázquez, also attended the event and emphasized the unique attractions in the region. Papantla boasts three world heritage sites and is known for being the birthplace of vanilla. Other towns in the area, such as Orizaba, Coatepec, Coscomatepec, Xico, and Zozocolco, are also filled with magical attributes that draw visitors.
The integration of Córdoba and Naolinco into the Magical Town program is expected to bring significant benefits to the region, including increased tourism and economic growth. The towns are now part of a select group of destinations in Mexico that have received this prestigious title, and they are eager to showcase their cultural heritage, natural beauty, and unique traditions to visitors from around the world.
