Tourism in the Mexican state of Sonora has experienced a significant boost following the designation of Ures and San Carlos as new Magical Towns. Since the start of the summer holidays, these two destinations have witnessed a remarkable increase in tourist arrivals, with a reported rise of at least 20%. Martha Arteaga, President of the Tourism Cluster, credits this surge in tourism to the allure of the new Magical Towns, attracting visitors from all across the country and beyond, eager to explore their rich culture, architecture, and gastronomy.

The official announcement by the Ministry of Tourism sparked curiosity and interest, leading to a surge in tourists flocking to both Ures and San Carlos. Notably, the hotel occupancy in these towns has seen a significant rise, with San Carlos experiencing double the usual rates despite some weather challenges. The region’s gastronomic shows and regional events in Ures have also contributed to the influx of visitors.

Sonora’s government has been proactive in promoting tourism through various projects, including collaborations with Arizona, the Sea of Cortez alliance, and the strengthening of air connectivity. These efforts, along with hosting international events, have played a pivotal role in attracting travelers. As a result, tourism sales reached an unprecedented 137.5 points, indicating that the tourism sector is on track to contribute 20% of the state’s gross domestic product, as highlighted by Governor Alfonso Durazo.

According to data from the Monthly Services Survey, the best results in May 2023 were recorded in the categories of Temporary Accommodation Services and Food and Beverage Preparation. The integration of San Carlos and Ures into Mexico’s Magical Towns list, announced in June, has significantly enhanced Sonora’s appeal as a must-visit tourist destination.

Ures’ charm, with its cobbled streets and elegant mansions steeped in Mexican history, has been a major attraction for travelers seeking a taste of tradition. In contrast, San Carlos has gained recognition for its breathtaking landscapes, water-based activities, and world-famous sunsets.

Local authorities have expressed their satisfaction with the positive economic impact of the appointment of Magical Towns. The rise in demand for tourist services has resulted in increased benefits for local merchants, hoteliers, and suppliers, leading to new job opportunities and overall development for the community.

To capitalize on this tourism boom, the government of Sonora launched a promotional campaign dubbed “I’m going to Sonora,” aimed at attracting more travelers to explore the state’s main attractions. Specialized operations have also been implemented to ensure a safe environment during the summer vacation season, covering areas of tourism, youth, and civil protection.

Roberto Gradillas, Secretary of Tourism of Sonora, expressed their dedication to providing exceptional service to visitors, thanks to the unwavering support of Governor Alfonso Durazo and coordinated efforts from various departments.

With its unique blend of desert landscapes, pristine beaches, and historical sites, Sonora has become an enticing destination for those seeking unforgettable experiences. As tourism continues to thrive, the state is poised to cement its position as a top choice for travelers in search of cultural richness and natural wonders.
