The Mexican government, led by Secretary of Tourism Miguel Torruco Marqués and Governor Rutilio Escandón Cadenas of the state of Chiapas, has launched the national Summer Vacation Operation 2023. The event kicked off in the picturesque town of San Cristóbal de las Casas and involves the participation of authorities from all levels of government.

Accompanied by Chiapas Secretary of Tourism Katyna de la Vega Grajales and officials from various government tiers, the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) announced that they are expecting around 55.4 million domestic and international tourists to visit Mexico’s different destinations during the summer season. This period spans from July to August 27, 2023.

The projected number of tourists staying in hotels is approximately 24.3 million, with 73% being domestic visitors and 27% international. This represents a 6.6% increase compared to the same holiday period in 2022 and is nearly on par with the figures from 2019.

The estimated revenue from lodging alone is expected to reach 70.72 billion Mexican pesos, contributing to a total tourist consumption of 776.7 billion pesos when factoring in other services.

Moreover, an additional 27.4 million domestic tourists and 3.6 million foreigners are anticipated to opt for alternative lodging arrangements, such as staying with relatives or friends or in second homes. This figure includes 5.9 million tourists who will choose shared economy accommodations.

The emphasis for this holiday season will be on providing improved road access to 116 tourist destinations, including 56 Magical Towns that possess cultural and historical significance.

As part of their visit to the region, the Secretary of Tourism and the Governor of Chiapas presented 20 new vehicle units from Ángeles Verdes, with 10 provided by Sectur and 10 by the state government. These new additions replace the existing fleet and will cover 16 state highway routes spanning a total of 3,032 kilometers, which see approximately 85,531 cars passing through daily.
