Mazatlán kicked off the year 2024 with a surge in cruise ship arrivals, welcoming over 8,000 passengers in the initial days. On Tuesday, Princess Cruises brought 4,033 visitors, contributing to a substantial economic impact of 5 million pesos, as reported by the Sinaloa Ministry of Tourism.

The month of January is set to witness a total of 14 cruise ships docking in Mazatlán, with the first four scheduled for this week alone. This influx of maritime travelers is anticipated to bring around 15,000 visitors to the port, creating a vibrant start to the new year.

Mazatlán currently stands as the second most popular destination based on the average number of passengers per ship, hosting an impressive 3,714 visitors. Only Majahual surpasses it with 3,920 passengers, while Cozumel in Quintana Roo trails behind with 3,570 passengers, despite being the primary cruise destination in the country, according to Datatur data.

Highlighting Mazatlán’s growing prominence, national platform Datatur reveals that the average number of cruise passengers in Mexico is 3,320, showcasing a remarkable 11.9% increase in Mazatlán over the national average.

Comparing annual figures up to October, Datatur indicates a substantial growth of 40.6% in the average number of cruise passengers per visit to Mazatlán, climbing from 2,641 in 2022 to 3,714 in 2023.

In its commitment to further boost tourism, the State Secretariat of Tourism in 2024 plans to intensify efforts to increase cruise frequencies to the state. The focus is not only on the number of visits but also on ensuring a higher passenger count, aligning with Governor Rubén Rocha Moya’s vision of tourism as a social benefit to the entire community.

The year commenced with the arrival of the Navigator of the Seas cruise ship on January 1, bringing 3,915 passengers and generating an economic windfall exceeding 4.9 million pesos for the port and surrounding rural areas frequented by cruise-goers.
