Veracruz is widely known for its scenic beaches attracting countless tourists yearning for sun and sand. However, the state also offers a rich tapestry of historical tourism that many are yet to discover. Veracruz, comprised of 212 municipalities, houses several lesser-known sites that are not only steeped in history but are also visually stunning.

Quiahuiztlán: A City, Cemetery, and Fortress

One remarkable site is Quiahuiztlán, which served triple roles in its heyday—as a bustling city with 15,000 residents, a cemetery, and a fortress. The site contains remnants of 78 tombs across three main cemeteries, illustrating its significant past. The defensive walls spanning the foothills of the hill fascinated the first Spaniards who documented their admiration in reports. Visitors can explore various structures like the central plaza, multiple pyramids, and both the central and east cemeteries.

Accessing Quiahuiztlán

Reaching Quiahuiztlán involves a scenic drive on the Cardel-Nautla coastal highway (federal route 180). A detour off this route leads directly to the main parking lot near this architecturally rich funerary complex, making it accessible for tourists keen on exploring its historical depth.

Cuyuxquihui: A Fortress in Disguise

Further into Veracruz’s historical landscape is Cuyuxquihui, accessible from Poza Rica through a route that passes notable locations like Coatzintia and El Tajín. This site is perched strategically with retaining walls that create an impression of a fortification. Its inaccessibility from the west and a cliff on the eastern side accentuate its fortified nature. The name ‘Cuyuxquihui’ originates from the Totonac language, meaning ‘armadillo tree’, which references a local tree with bark resembling an armadillo’s shell.

Teayo Castle: A Testament to Ancient Huastec Civilization

Another intriguing site is Castillo de Teayo, located near Poza Rica along Highway 130. This area was a prominent city during the ancient Huastec civilization, with influences ranging from the 10th to the 12th century. It later experienced significant Mexica influences during the Late Postclassic period. The site is dominated by a pyramid-like structure that likely served as a temple. Visitors can also explore a small museum on-site that displays sculptures indicative of a phallic cult prevalent in the region.

Each of these sites offers a unique glimpse into the rich historical tapestry of Veracruz, providing a profound contrast to the usual beach tourism. These historical gems cater to those eager to delve into the archaeological and cultural past of the region, promising an enriching experience that goes beyond the conventional tourist paths.
