The State of Mexico is a compendium of the present, past and future of the country. Its great beauty and natural variety, with mountains and volcanoes, rivers and lakes, valleys and forests, has been the appropriate setting for a history that goes from its splendid pre-Hispanic times to the promising future, in which it appears as one of the main engines from the country.

It is counted among the five main tourist destinations in Mexico, thanks to its beautiful landscapes, rich biodiversity, impressive archaeological sites, beautiful colonial buildings, and dynamic modern areas. Home to magical towns, adventure routes, delicious gastronomy, delicate crafts and, mainly, the great warmth and hospitality of its people, the State of Mexico is the living and attractive heart of the Mexican Republic.

The State of Mexico is an incredible destination to explore the surroundings of Mexico City. With five magical towns, Monarch butterfly sanctuaries, and the Mexica archaeological site of Teotihuacán, it is a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Mexico City and embrace the wonders of nature. From the Paso de Cortés, located between Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes, one can enjoy the best views in the state.

Toluca, the capital of the State of Mexico, is a colonial city that has been modernized. The Cathedral of San José de Toluca, built on the Franciscan convent of La Asunción, is a prominent landmark. The city also boasts the Botanical Garden, which has a gigantic window of the Cosmo Vitral.

The Magical Town of Tepotzotlán showcases colonial architecture from the Hispanic viceroyalty with its cobbled streets. The Temple of San Francisco Javier is a World Heritage Site and home to the National Museum of the Viceroyalty. A walk through the quiet provincial city will lead to its market, where one can find masterfully prepared quesadillas, sopes, pambazos, and tacos. The Plaza de las Artesanías is a recommended spot for shopping for objects made by the skilled artists of Tepotzotlán.

Metepec, known for its pottery tradition, has acquired prestige throughout Mexico. Its clay figures of the Tree of Life are one of the most representative symbols of indigenous and religious syncretism. During the celebration of the Day of the Dead in November, Metepec is filled with offerings that recreate a pyramid of feelings with the memory of the deceased.

Oro (Gold) is another magical town, which has in its name and mining tradition the reason for its inclusion in the list of special towns of Mexico. The gold rush that broke out when the nuggets surfaced thanks to the English mining companies produced the growth of the small town. The Juárez Theater and the Municipal Palace, following the lines of art nouveau or neoclassics, form a monumental complex. In the surroundings, we find the Brockman dam, a place of quiet recreation.

To the southwest of the state, Valle del Bravo, around the artificial lake of the Miguel Alemán Dam reservoir, has become an “oasis” for DF residents who come out to cool off by practicing sports in its waters. Malinalco, unlike the other magical towns in the State of Mexico, receives its importance from its archaeological zone. The Hill of the Idols is where the ancient Aztec ceremonial site is located, with the Sanctuary of the Eagle and Jaguar Warriors.

Ixtapan de la Sal is another city that deserves our interest. Since the time of the Matlatzinca peoples, salt was traded through barter. Today it is a city with an air of a colonial, modern past and a second residence for Toluqueños and city dwellers who seek relaxation in the waters of its spas or in its golf courses in the Ixtapan Water Park, one of the largest in all of Latin America.

The State of Mexico is also an excellent destination for ecotourism. The monarch butterfly sanctuaries are one of the most active tourism offers in natural landscapes. One of them is the San José del Rincón sanctuary where thousands of butterflies cover the trees like a blanket when winter approaches in Canada.

Finally, the state of Mexico is also an excellent destination for children. Burrolandia, the Otumba donkey sanctuary, is created as a non-profit association that fights to preserve the donkey species in Mexico. The state of Mexico has so much to offer that it is a must-visit destination.
